Gee, what a waste of money. I was unfortunate enough to catch a viewingof this, uh, film on its opening night. And I honestly had highexpectations. But, not unlike Thor, it fell very VERY short.

Here are a few of the problems I had with the movie.

1. No development. With EVERYTHING. No character development, no plotdevelopment, and no emotional development.

2. Mediocre acting. Enough said.

3. It was too over-the-top. And this is coming from a BatmanBegins/Dark Knight fanatic. Red Skull was a seriously lousy villain. Hewas more laughable than frightening, especially his cheap looking face.

4. The plot itself. I was honestly looking forward to seeing CaptainAmerica fight the Nazis, not HYDRA. And the dumb Hydra salute made megag. I also wasn’t sure what was going on at times. The magical “cube”(Transformers knockoff?) wasn’t settling with me. I expected this to bemore about WWII itself, not some stupid mystical idea that was moresophomoric and typical than interesting and captivating.

5. The technology. This was the WWII era. And there were littlereminders everywhere that said, “Hey! It’s the 40’s!” But then…Hydra’s, uh, “ray guns” for lack of better terminology were somewhatthrown at us. I didn’t like it. And the likely hood that a bunch ofdrunks with 40’s weaponry could survive such combat.

6. The romance. Ugh. You can integrate a romantic subplot in a”superhero” movie and do it well, I’ve seen it done (Spider-man 2, TheDark Knight). But this was much too Thor-esque. I’m sorry, let mespecify. You could see the chemistry between Steve and Peggy rightaway, but it just kind of sat there until, all of a sudden, love! And,of course, with romance comes automatic romantic tension. Blonde kissesSteve. Peggy gets mad/jealous. Wow. Didn’t see that coming. Iron man 3 presents the audience with one of theworst story lines for a villain that i know off, No backgroundinformation a pointless twist (spoiler) The all powerful presence ofthe Manderine in the trailers is reduce to a stage actor hired by agroup of so called terrorists in order to hide there true identity,along with this the villains themselves have to be even more farfetched that iron man himself.The Film as moved from a Plot orientated film to that more concernedwith making the audience laugh and gaze into the high octane actionsequences, which don’t get me wrong are incredible but seem to lack acertain relevance seeing as the film is meant to bring Tony Stark backto basics as in the creation of Iron Man in the first installment. Theplot is weak at best.I’ve never noticed the difference in a film due to a director change asmuch as this, Jon Favreau’s leading absence can be felt throughout thequick witted and fell placed humor is missing and replaced with endlesscheap gags and the clever plot evolution present in IM1 and IM2 is notexistent.So all in all if your looking for a quick watch everything blow up andlaugh about it film this is for you, but if your looking for the ironman you’ve come to know from 1 and 2 you best hope he finds himself intime the second installment of the Avengers.

The clichés of the “scary” movie genre make this movie’ssuppose-to-be scary parts, very predictable, however the plot is not.You can tell when the music gets quiet “oh I bet there’s gonna besomething behind him.” and will you look at that, something was behindhim. The plot however, was well done. Had the movie spent more time onthe advancement of the plot rather than simply trying to scare itsaudience, you would have a much better result. I went into this movie assuming it would be just another stupid,pointless, and crappy “scary” film. I was pleasantly surprised to findthe plot adequate, but not to find the execution of that plot lacking.Overall, Dark Skies is a better experience than any other typical”scary” movie due to its Sci-fi thriller plot. Its worth seeing, justdon’t go in expecting to be surprised by it. That’s my reason for a6/10 rather than anything higher. It however, dodges the 5/10 or 4/10marks it would’ve had, if it weren’t for its plot.
