Movie plot:

I went into the theater expecting to see a cartoon for adults and thatis exactly what I paid for.Guillermo Del Toro is an extremely talented director, producer andabove all an extraordinary artist. Pan’s Labyrinth gave justice to histalents and “The Strain trilogy” exemplifies his talents as a creatorand innovator of interesting mind-grabbing stories/plots.However, Pacific Rim was a horrible movie not only because it lackedsubstance (a clear plot, climax, resolution), but because it proved toaudiences everywhere that Hollywood no longer requires decent actorsand plot-lines to create a blockbuster movie.The only intricacies and attention to detail that could be found inthis movie was in the CG design of the so called Jaegers (Robots). Yet,the movie served to ignore the basic human sense of sight when most ofthe movie took place in a dark setting. This movie is a microcosm of everything wrong with Hollywood…and,unfortunately, humans in general.You see, in the most basic terms possible…people are, for the mostpart, stupid. There are far more of these stupid people on Earth thanintelligent ones. So, if you want to sell something to these people,like a movie, you need to dial-down the intelligence level of theproduct. (In this way, Iron Man 2 succeeds!) For instance, let’s sayyou want to sell a product to a group of Sarah-Palin-backing TeaBaggers. You already know, without ever meeting any of them, that thisa group of people who supports a brainless political creation, one whodoesn’t even belong to the Tea Bagger party! (High intelligence there,eh?!) So if you were to invent a t-shirt with a saying on it, with theintention of selling it to a Tea Bagger…would you create anarticulate, detailed argument on the t-shirt…or would you createsomething that appeals to the lowest common denominator? Would yourt-shirt say something smart and factual like “90% of Tea Baggers got atax cut under Obama!”. Or would you just put Obama on the shirt with aHitler mustache?! Which one is going to sell better? Same thing herewith “Iron Man 2”. I went to see this film in a free screening and took my nephew andniece with me, seeing as it was a family film to try and get differentreactions to the film.

Let me start off with my view of the film, I’ve been a fan of Tintinsince I first saw the cartoon back in the early 90’s, though never readthe comics. When I saw the credits of who wrote, produced and directedthe film, you think to yourself this film is going to be awesome, thereis no way with all that talent they can’t possible f**k this up (andthey didn’t). You have Spielberg directing, Peter Jackson as aproducer. Also the writing team great with Steven Moffat, known forSherlock, Dr who, Coupling and another of my child hood favs, PressGang. Finally you have Edgar Wright, who wrote and directed Shawn ofthe Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

The version of the film i saw was 3d, as it was a preview and i didn’thave a choice. Normally i watch all my showing in 2d as i think itspersonally a fad and a rip off and the films i have seen excludingAvatar, i didn’t think the 3d aspect improved the film going enjoymentone bit. This again is my option while the 3d is nice, and the shotsgoing through glass and water was really good, there was nothing elsethat would have me pulling out another £2 a ticket. I would have beenhappy with a basic 2d version.

On to the film story, TinTin (voice by Billy Elliott’s Jamie Bell) buysa handmade ship in market. As soon as he buys it he gets a number ofoffers of people willing to buy it from him, which TinTtn rejects. Gee, what a waste of money. I was unfortunate enough to catch a viewingof this, uh, film on its opening night. And I honestly had highexpectations. But, not unlike Thor, it fell very VERY short.

Here are a few of the problems I had with the movie.

1. No development. With EVERYTHING. No character development, no plotdevelopment, and no emotional development.

2. Mediocre acting. Enough said.

3. It was too over-the-top. And this is coming from a BatmanBegins/Dark Knight fanatic. Red Skull was a seriously lousy villain. Hewas more laughable than frightening, especially his cheap looking face.

4. The plot itself. I was honestly looking forward to seeing CaptainAmerica fight the Nazis, not HYDRA. And the dumb Hydra salute made megag. I also wasn’t sure what was going on at times. The magical “cube”(Transformers knockoff?) wasn’t settling with me. I expected this to bemore about WWII itself, not some stupid mystical idea that was moresophomoric and typical than interesting and captivating.

5. The technology. This was the WWII era. And there were littlereminders everywhere that said, “Hey! It’s the 40’s!” But then…Hydra’s, uh, “ray guns” for lack of better terminology were somewhatthrown at us. I didn’t like it. And the likely hood that a bunch ofdrunks with 40’s weaponry could survive such combat.

6. The romance. Ugh. You can integrate a romantic subplot in a”superhero” movie and do it well, I’ve seen it done (Spider-man 2, TheDark Knight). But this was much too Thor-esque. I’m sorry, let mespecify. You could see the chemistry between Steve and Peggy rightaway, but it just kind of sat there until, all of a sudden, love! And,of course, with romance comes automatic romantic tension. Blonde kissesSteve. Peggy gets mad/jealous. Wow. Didn’t see that coming. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey brings back the magic of MiddleEarth, but I think it’s unfortunate that it will experience theinevitable comparison to The Lord of the Rings trilogy — because it’sa very different kind of work, a different kind of tale, a differentkind of atmosphere, a different kind of story progression with adifferent kind of flow. LOTR fans rushing in just to get another tasteof the original films may be disappointed. There is certainly no lessintensity, though the scale of the adventure is not quite as large. Thechange in moods between comical Dwarf mischief and dark, violentbattles is a bit jarring. The soundtrack I am sad to say is ratherfamiliar and wholly unimpressive. The pacing suffers some fromJackson’s decision to spread the story into three parts; the movieseems to trace a disjoint set of drawn-out events along Bilbo’sjourney. They don’t seem to be using human actors anymore fororcs/goblins, and it shows in some scenes where the CGI is spotty. Andyet through it all, I never wanted it to end. Even nearing its exhausting 2 and a half hours, I kept hoping thecredits would never roll. It’s a fascinating, exhilarating, andhilarious ride from start to finish.

Not the same kind of film as LOTR,but epic in its own right. The acting was pitch-perfect, especiallyfrom Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Richard Armitage as Thorin. Thebattles were exciting and fast- paced. To my great surprise and relief,the 3D and 48fps played out quite nicely and did not detract from thefootage. And my favorite part of course was Gollum’s return to thescreen. Bilbo’s riddle battle with Gollum was possibly the mostdelightfully intense scene in the movie.The theater was filled with “awwwwww’s” when the credits hit, and soI’m sure every satisfied viewer will be back in their seats next yeareagerly awaiting the second installment of The Hobbit. Theconcept of the movie is OK, no epic invasion or weird aliens taken overearth by force. Earth is already taken and most of humanity has alreadybeen hosted by aliens. But then it’s up to the director to makesomething of it, epic fail… Slow, boring, no suspense, terribledialog and terrible romantic scenes… And then the frkn plot, there’sa small group of humans hiding for the aliens in the rocks somewhere inthe Nevada dessert. They occasionally go out to get supplies and takehumans hosted by aliens to try and “fix” them. And there’s a bunch ofaliens looking for them, but are unable to find them. Soundsreasonable, except for the fact that the aliens fly over the hidingplace with a chopper several times during the movie but mysteriouslyseem to miss that there’s only one frkn road in the dessert that leadsdirectly to the hiding place… I rest my case

This movie rips off virtually every great cop thriller in the historyof cinema. Maybe that’s the point, if you take from the best you’rebound to get a few things right.James McAvoy plays a smart and determined rookie detective who almosttakes down the “Big Bad” robber, played by Mark Strong, only to getshot and disgraced. Now a new case three years later brings these twoback together and that cop is looking for payback and redemption. A fewsurprises come up along the way.The acting is solid, especially from McAvoy as the obsessed/damaged copand Strong as his wily nemesis. Great good guy/bad guy chemistrybetween them. And fine support from David Morrissey as McAvoy’s smarmyboss and Peter Mullan as Strong’s old friend and partner.The action is well done and choreographed. The direction, photographyand editing are all top-notched.Eran Creevy did a great job directing this cast and crew but failed togive us something fresh. Maybe next time he should work with anotherscreenwriter to polish and refine his vision.With a less derivative script we might have gotten a much better film.As it stands, it’s a “paint-by-numbers” that’s really well done andhighly entertaining.Worth your time.
