I went into the theater expecting to see a cartoon for adults and thatis exactly what I paid for.Guillermo Del Toro is an extremely talented director, producer andabove all an extraordinary artist. Pan’s Labyrinth gave justice to histalents and “The Strain trilogy” exemplifies his talents as a creatorand innovator of interesting mind-grabbing stories/plots.However, Pacific Rim was a horrible movie not only because it lackedsubstance (a clear plot, climax, resolution), but because it proved toaudiences everywhere that Hollywood no longer requires decent actorsand plot-lines to create a blockbuster movie.The only intricacies and attention to detail that could be found inthis movie was in the CG design of the so called Jaegers (Robots). Yet,the movie served to ignore the basic human sense of sight when most ofthe movie took place in a dark setting. (May contain SPOILERS) One of the most annoying things about “Now YouSee Me” is lens flare. Lens flare is the current cinematic trick dujour, if not obsession of many directors looking to slick up theirmovies with a high gloss. Lens flare, you may recall, is when lightenters the lens, refracts and creates a brief mini super-nova acrossthe film frame. The cinematic equivalent of having a flashlight shonein your eyes, which this film does, on numerous occasions. It’s an aptvisual metaphor for a movie that proclaims itself to be about divertingthe gaze in order to trick the viewer. But here, temporary blindness(like fake lens flare), is a cheap gimmick that is much easier toemploy than true slight of hand. There’s no real sense of magic in thismovie that is about magic. The tricks along with the nature of magicitself are constantly being explained along the way draining the filmof magic of any kind. The would be “brainy” complications of the plotare not brainy enough…the complicated bank account trick slogs on forwhat seems an eternity. Capers need to be plotted with air-tightprecision that stand up to repeated viewings. The caper needs to becarried out by characters about whom you care enough to be invested inwhether or not they get caught. The filmmakers here make the deadlymistake of thinking the tricks are more interesting than thetricksters. And present a series of tricks that are not really all thatcompelling. Shallow characters carrying out rather pedestrian tricksadds up to a movie that’s rather shallow and pedestrian, no matter howmuch lens flare you throw at the camera. Which is a shame, because it’sa fantastic premise which should have been developed for someone up tothe task…a cinematic magician if you will. As for the plot, it getsloopier as it goes along, trying to explain itself because it reallyhas no point. You never really know what anyone’s motivation is…whois Morgan Freeman again? Why is Michael Caine in this and why is itokay to rob him? Which would be fine, except the movie is at such painsto keep explaining itself (literally) it starts to feel that the movieis explaining itself to itself. There are far more of these stupid people on Earth thanintelligent ones. So, if you want to sell something to these people,like a movie, you need to dial-down the intelligence level of theproduct. (In this way, Iron Man 2 succeeds!) For instance, let’s sayyou want to sell a product to a group of Sarah-Palin-backing TeaBaggers. You already know, without ever meeting any of them, that thisa group of people who supports a brainless political creation, one whodoesn’t even belong to the Tea Bagger party! (High intelligence there,eh?!) So if you were to invent a t-shirt with a saying on it, with theintention of selling it to a Tea Bagger…would you create anarticulate, detailed argument on the t-shirt…or would you createsomething that appeals to the lowest common denominator? Would yourt-shirt say something smart and factual like “90% of Tea Baggers got atax cut under Obama!”. Or would you just put Obama on the shirt with aHitler mustache?! Which one is going to sell better? Same thing herewith “Iron Man 2”. A producer COULD spend $200 Million on somethinghighly intelligent and with some redeeming value — and sell lesstickets — or that same producer could spend the $200 Million on abunch of special effects, A-list stars and explosions — and sell moretickets. Where didthey come up with that suit design, the Johnny Weir collection?! AndGwyneth Paltrow? How does she keep getting work?! She’s the “MarkHarmon” of actresses! In one scene, she seductively kisses the Iron Manmask — with no human in it! (Imagine her horror when she read thescript for the first time and came across that scene!) Perfection is a state of completeness and flawlessness. How many of youhave known a perfectionist or you yourself feel the need to be perfectat all times? To the point where it almost drives you or the personinsane? But to be honest, I think we’ve all had those moments ofwanting to be perfect. Praised as one of the best films of the year,Darren Aronofsky takes us into the psyche of another character, I wouldsay that this is my favorite film by him. At a young age he has come sofar in creating some of cinema’s most fascinating characters andstories, he’s given us such amazing films. His vision brings out one ofthe year’s best films and one of my new favorites, he and NataliePortman were meant to work together. I absolutely adore NataliePortman, but I have been waiting for her to have a role as challengingas Black Swan, her intelligence, grace, beauty and talent shine and Ihope she is not only nominated but wins the Oscar for this film. Thesupporting cast is incredible as well, Mila Kunis, I am just falling inlove with her. Proving more and more that she’s not just a pretty facebut can take on a role that can be dangerous and makes it her own andmakes it relatable to the audience. Vincent Cassel is becoming one ofmy favorite actors, he’s so strong and passionate and clearly gave somuch into this role as the seductive dance teacher who in a sense ishis dancer’s prince from Swan Lake.A New York City ballet company is preparing for the production of SwanLake, which tells the story of an innocent, fragile White Swan whofalls in love with a Prince. The ballet company has chosen to cast anewcomer to the dual role of both the White and Black Swan, casting outtheir top ballerina Beth MacIntyre. Dancer Nina Sayers, extremelydedicated to achieving technical perfection, competes for the partalongside several other young dancers, including Lily. Is she crazy and how she became that way is just sotragic. The way her mother behaves around her, almost an incestuousrelationship is just horrific, not giving her daughter a chance to growup and become a woman. Nina is trying so hard to be perfect that sheforgets that it’s OK to let loose and make a mistake. Her dance is sobeyond beautiful, Natalie is one heck of a dancer and you can onlyimagine some of the pain she endured for this movie. Her dancing tellsa story as well, her body language, you can tell she thinks too hardabout things. Lily is exactly what Nina always wanted to be butcouldn’t because of her mother. Lily and Nina’s love scene is so beyondintense, you just find yourself loosing your mind with Nina.Black Swan is not only one of the best movies of the year, but one ofmy favorite films. I can’t stop thinking about it and cannot wait untilI get the DVD so I can watch it more and study it. It’s a darkerversion of the play Swan Lake and is just so hauntingly beautiful. Movie plot:

George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a recently retired MI6 agent, is doing his best to adjust to a life outside the secret service. However, when a disgraced agent reappears with information concerning a mole at the heart of the service, Smiley is drawn back into the murky field of espionage. Tasked with investigating which of his trusted former colleagues has chosen to betray him and their country, Smiley narrows his search to four suspects – all experienced, skilled and successful agents – but past histories, rivalries and friendships make it far from easy to pinpoint the man who is eating away at the heart of the British establishment.

I really wanted to enjoy this film. I watch the 1979 TV series at leastonce a year and was looking forward to a new, dark, edgy take on awell-loved story.I was very disappointed. First, the plot is mashed up (for exampleRicki Tarr, who should set Smiley’s mole hunt in motion, does notappear until the half-way point). Secondly, characters are notdeveloped and even altered (Percy Alleline is a peevish bully, ratherthan an over-promoted pompous buffoon who has been suckered into givingthe KGB a pipeline into Western intelligence, and Peter Guillam isfashionably gay). We don’t even get any sense of Bill Haydon’smotivation to turn double agent apart from a throwaway line about theWest being “rather horrible”. Colin Firth does make more of Haydon’sfrustration at working for an increasingly impotent power – Britain -when he wants to make a mark on History and therefore turns to a moredynamic force which he believes the USSR to be.There is no suspense in the key scenes where Peter Guillam steals a topsecret file from the archives, or even in the revelation of the mole.What Hitchcock could have done with these sequences! One scene whichdid work for me on a symbolic level was the Christmas party. This isoriginal to the film but does suggest how the British intelligenceservice (and, by implication, Britain itself) has become lazy andhedonistic, and is losing its grip.Gary Oldman totally fails to capture George Smiley’s self-deprecatingintelligence. We get no indication of Smiley piecing together a jigsawand realising what the ‘Witchcraft’ project really means. Film-makersoften confuse British reserve with unemotional stolidity, and Oldmanwalks straight into that trap.The cinematography looks good, with shadowy interiors suggesting theclaustrophobia of the world of espionage, but the design for the CircusHQ is all wrong – it is not a huge open-plan office, but a series ofsmall, seedy little rooms.All in all this was a huge disappointment. I went to see this film in a free screening and took my nephew andniece with me, seeing as it was a family film to try and get differentreactions to the film.

Let me start off with my view of the film, I’ve been a fan of Tintinsince I first saw the cartoon back in the early 90’s, though never readthe comics. When I saw the credits of who wrote, produced and directedthe film, you think to yourself this film is going to be awesome, thereis no way with all that talent they can’t possible f**k this up (andthey didn’t). You have Spielberg directing, Peter Jackson as aproducer. Also the writing team great with Steven Moffat, known forSherlock, Dr who, Coupling and another of my child hood favs, PressGang. Finally you have Edgar Wright, who wrote and directed Shawn ofthe Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

The version of the film i saw was 3d, as it was a preview and i didn’thave a choice. Normally i watch all my showing in 2d as i think itspersonally a fad and a rip off and the films i have seen excludingAvatar, i didn’t think the 3d aspect improved the film going enjoymentone bit. This again is my option while the 3d is nice, and the shotsgoing through glass and water was really good, there was nothing elsethat would have me pulling out another £2 a ticket. I would have beenhappy with a basic 2d version.

On to the film story, TinTin (voice by Billy Elliott’s Jamie Bell) buysa handmade ship in market. As soon as he buys it he gets a number ofoffers of people willing to buy it from him, which TinTtn rejects. Whenhe gets home Snowy, Tintin dog, breaks the ship and a hidden clue rollsout, which begins Tintin trying to work out what it means. Tintin thengets kidnapped by the evil Ivanovich Sakharine (Daniel Craig), who isafter the clue. This where Tintin mets up with Captain Haddock as theyset of trying to work out the meaning of Tintin clue. A small drink movie good quality.
